Krak Card setup and Apple Pay

The virtual card was available as soon as setup was complete. I added it to Apple Pay and started using it without waiting for the physical card to arrive.

How I spend euros without touching Bitcoin

I blocked Bitcoin from card payments in the app. Purchases therefore come from my euro balance, while eligible cashback can still be paid directly in Bitcoin.

The travel test

Using the Krak Card abroad: camper and flight bookings

We paid the deposit for our Iceland camper directly in Icelandic króna. Since then, we have also used the card for several other bookings, including Singapore Airlines flights charged in the local currency. Every payment went through without a problem. Krak did not add an FX markup, and the conversion followed the Mastercard rate shown for each transaction.

Krak Card cashback: how the tiers work

Eligible cashback has appeared promptly after purchases settled in my test. I chose Bitcoin as the reward currency, although Krak also offers cash rewards. The rate depends on the 30-day average value of assets held across Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro.

Cashback tiers at a glance 30-day average assets across Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro
  1. 0% < €200
  2. 0.5% from €200
  3. 1% from €1,000

Is the Krak Card worth it for travel?

It may suit you if …

  • You want a straightforward debit card for daily spending and travel.
  • You use Apple Pay or prefer carrying a physical Mastercard.
  • You want to keep euro spending separate from your Bitcoin holdings.
  • Cashback in Bitcoin appeals to you more than points or miles.

It is probably not for you if …

  • You need a credit facility or bundled travel insurance.
  • You mainly collect airline miles or credit-card points.
  • You do not want to keep assets with Krak or Kraken.
  • You do not accept value fluctuations when choosing crypto cashback.

Important: The Krak Card is a debit card, not a credit card or investment recommendation. Cashback tiers depend on average assets held with Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro. Bitcoin cashback can rise or fall in euro value. Krak does not add an FX markup, but asset conversion spreads and third-party ATM fees may still apply.

Krak Card FAQ

Is the Krak Card a credit card?

No. It is a Mastercard debit card. Purchases use the spendable cash or crypto balance in your Krak account, following the spend order you set in the app.

Does the Krak Card charge foreign transaction fees?

Krak says it does not add an FX fee and passes on the Mastercard exchange rate. A spread can apply when Krak has to sell or convert an asset, and an ATM operator may charge its own fee.

Can I use the Krak Card with Apple Pay?

Yes. I added the virtual card to Apple Pay immediately after setup. Google Wallet is also supported according to Krak.

Where is the Krak Card available?

At the time of this update, only eligible personal customers in the United Kingdom and European Economic Area can apply for the card. Once issued, it can be used worldwide wherever Mastercard is accepted. Kraken says that covers more than 200 countries and territories. A US launch has been announced, but no launch date has been confirmed. Availability and terms can change, so check the app before applying.

I used the Krak Card for 30 days in daily life, through Apple Pay, as a physical card, and for a larger payment in Icelandic króna. This article documents that first-hand experience. Krak did not pay for the review, but the page contains a clearly marked referral link.
